Adjuvant Intraoperative Procedures
Foot & Ankle Tumor / Adjuvant Intraoperative Procedures

Numerous benign bone tumors can be successfully treated by intralesional curettage. With the aid of the high speed burr, a macroscopically tumor-free bone cavity be created; the thermal effect of the burr is increased by omitting continuous cooling measures (irrigation). Furthermore, the local recurrence rate of some active and aggressive benign bone lesions can be reduced by the intraoperative use of local chemical or thermal adjuvants – such as phenol, ethanol, liquid nitrogen, or bone cement (PMMA). The tumor cell-denaturing potential of PMMA has not been sufficiently investigated compared with established adjuvants. However, the advantage of plombage with bone cement is an immediate stabilizing effect on the curetted bone cavity as well as a visible demarcation to the surrounding bone tissue in subsequent check-ups with MRI.
