Introducing

After being trained as a paramedic at RedCross Bavaria/Germany from 1994-1996, PD Dr.med. Andreas Toepfer, MD, PhD started medical school in 1996 at Ludwigs Maximilians University of Munich, Germany and finished his studies at Technical University of Munich, Germany in 2002. His professional training included stays abroad in the US (Stanford & University of San Francisco) as a visiting student/intern and at Royal Melbourne University, Australia and Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Capetown, South Africa as a final year medical student.

His training in general orthopedics commenced in 2002. He soon focused on tumor orthopedics under the guidance of renowned Professor Dr. Reiner Gradinger at Technical University Hospital Klinikum Rechts der Isar Munich, Germany. Patients from all over the world sought the expertise of his professor in the treatment of benign and malignant musculoskeletal tumors. The daily management of these rare diseases inside and outside the operation theatre greatly helped Dr.Toepfer to gain the necessary experience and technical skills in treating his own patients.

 

Dr.Toepfer’s scientific work soon concentrated on tumor orthopedics and foot and ankle surgery. In 2007 he finished his doctoral thesis on Distal Femoral Replacement in tumor cases and revision arthroplasty patients. Until today, Dr.Toepfer has published and co-authored more than 70 peer reviewed scientific papers and book chapters, has given more than 40 scientific presentations at international congresses and more than 125 presentations at instructional courses for medical experts, the vast majority on foot and ankle surgery and tumor orthopedics.

He finished his orthopedic speciality training in 2008 when he was board certified as an orthopedic surgeon.

 

In 2011 he was appointed head of foot&ankle surgery department by the clinic´s director Professor Dr.von Eisenhart-Rothe at Technical University, Klinikum Rechts der Isar, and acted as deputy head of the multidisciplinary musculoskeletal tumor board under renowned tumor specialist Professor Dr.Dr. Hans Rechl.

 

In 2014, after additionally being trained in trauma surgery, Dr.Toepfer gained his medical specialist certificate and board certification for trauma surgery and special orthopedic surgery.

In 2014 and 2015 Dr.Toepfer certified as a speciality trained foot and ankle surgeon by Germany´s GFFC and DAFsocieties.

 

Since 2015, Dr.Toepfer is a senior consultant and instructor in the training of foot and ankle surgeons for Arthrex and performs several international cadaver lab courses a year to help other surgeons treat their patients better. Here, one of his fields of expertise is minimally-invasive and arthroscopic surgery of the foot and ankle.

 

In 2015 and 2016, Dr.Toepfer certified as senior surgeon of the clinics maximum care endoprosthesis centre (EndoCert certificate). Up today, Dr.Toepfer has performed more than 70 complex tumor and osseous defect reconstructions using modular megaprostheses of the upper and lower limb as well as the pelvis, including Total Femoral Replacement, Partial Pelvic Replacement and Total Humeral Replacement.

 

In 2016, Dr.Toepfer won an international travel scholarship by Latin American Society of Orthopedics (SLAOT) and German Society for Orthopedic Surgery (DGOOC) and travelled to Chile, Argentina and Brazil to work on a bilateral international orthopedic exchange and share valuable knowledge.

In 2016, he was appointed team doctor for FC Bayern Munich´s Basketball´s FarmTeam/ProB and certified as M-Arzt (Mannschafts-Arzt) by VBG, allowing him to officially treat professional athletes.

 

In 2017, Dr.Toepfer certified as senior foot&ankle surgeon  (FußCert/ClaCert) at one of Germany´s first maximum care centres for foot and ankle surgery, Schoen Clinic Munich Harlaching.

In 2017, Dr.Toepfer certified as one of the first and few speciality trained tumor orthopedic surgeons by German DGOOC and DGOU societies.

 

In 2018, Dr.Toepfer was appointed head of foot and ankle surgery by Professor Dr. Jost at renowned Kantonsspital St.Gallen, Switzerland, which by many is considered the cradle of European orthopedics.

 

In 2019, he was appointed head of tumor orthopedics in St.Gallen, Switzerland and finished his postdoctoral qualification and habilitation (Privatdozent, venia legendi et venia docendi at Technical University Munich) with his scientific work on foot and ankle tumors. Here, he developed minimally-invasive techniques in the treatment of benign osteolytic bone tumors of the hindfoot and published his research on the epidemiology of foot and ankle tumors.

 

In 2020, Dr.Toepfer was appointed member of the European Foot And Ankle (EFAS) Research Committee and assigned with the task of establishing a pan-European registry for foot and ankle tumors.
